Emotional Awareness Month (October 2019)



Emotional Awareness and Health go hand in hand. Mental and Spiritual Health can affect you just as much as your Physical health. Emotional Awareness is the ability to name and claim your emotions in the present and work through healthy mindfulness and coping skills when feeling negative emotions.

Stress has such an impact on our lives, there are numerous ways that we do not always fully understand. That is why it’s important to educate ourselves and be advocates to our own physical and mental health.

When we do not pay attention to our stress levels or stay in tune with our body and mind, it can cause negative physical and psychological distress to our bodies. Diabetes, heart attacks, high blood pressure, depression, and anxiety are just a few of the ways that our bodies can be affected by our lack of awareness.

What can you do about it? One way is mindfulness. Take a break. Give yourself a chance to breathe. I know this can be annoying to hear someone say. We think, “if it were only that easy.” Here’s the thing. It is that easy.

We as people over-complicate this.

When we breathe, it causes our nervous system to begin to relax. It allows our brain to get out of a hyper-aroused state. It allows your heart rate to come back down. It creates our ability to get back into “thinking mode” in the pre-frontal cortex of the brain. Just by breathing.

Slow down for a moment. Take the time to notice what is going on around you. Remind yourself that only one thing can happen at a time. You are only in control of yourself and how you react.

Because of this, you have the ultimate power. Being aware of our emotions, our body, and our present, will create and enhance our future, our goals, our motivation, and our health.

Everything in our bodies are tied together. Our mental and physical health tie in together more than we have ever realized. The more you know, the more you grow. The more willing we are to becoming more aware, the more we are able to feel in control of our bodies and minds. The more we are able to stick to our journey of healthy living and continue loving ourselves, the more we are able to help each other.

In the end, we are in this together.
